Jonathan and Laura were married at the impressive Bamburgh Castle, in front of 40 of their closest family and friends, with a very fitting medieval theme. The couple, all of the guests  and even the registrars donned traditional medieval dress; with the backdrop of the grand Castle, it really did transport everyone back in time.

We asked the couple why they chose Northumberland as their location and here’s what they said:

“We are both very keen on history and we wanted to tour some of Britain’s most famous spots! We chose to visit Northumberland, as neither of us had been before, and made our first visit in 2016. We managed to visit 11 of Northumberlands magnificent castles in only a week. In 2017, Jonathan arranged his proposal and he proposed in the Kings Hall at Bamburgh Castle. Following on from a serious illness in 2018, we decided to start planning our wedding day. We viewed so many castles closer to home but we just couldn’t get Bamburgh out of our heads. We knew then that we had to book our beloved Bamburgh Castle for our ceremony. We love Northumberland so much now that we are seriously considering retiring here!”

They chose to be married on June 21st as the couple loved the idea that it was summer solstice, meaning they had the longest period of sunlight in the year. The couple held their ceremony in the historic Kings Hall as they loved the history and atmosphere that emanated from the hall. Jonathan and Laura plan on returning once a year to visit the location that holds so many special memories for them.

Asking the couple their favourite part of the day, they said:

After the ceremony at Bamburgh, we moved to Chillingham Castle for our reception and medieval banquet, while the guests made their way to the banquet hall, I led Laura up to the castle on a horse. It was a very special and magical moment. However, the ceremony itself is definitely our most treasured memory of the day. We took the registrar’s advice to personalise our ceremony and included our own promises, a hand blessing, a unity candle ceremony and a special reading from our nephew, Charlie. Including all of these personal touches really made the ceremony feel unique to the two of us.”

We asked the happy newly-weds for some advice to other couples planning their special day and they said:

Follow your heart and have your ceremony the way you want it. Enjoy your day as it really does go over so fast and don’t over think your plans! Northumberland Registrars ceremony coordination team were always accessible and gave us information on different candle ceremonies and readings we could incorporate. We were both overjoyed that our Registrars were happy to get involved in the theme, so don’t be shy to ask the ceremony coordination team for inspiration!”

Laura and Jonathan really created an individual and memorable day that fit their interests perfectly. Northumberland Registrars wish them both a happy and historic marriage.
